At the time of my cancer diagnosis, unbeknownst to me, I had a condition called leaky gut syndrome. Leaky gut syndrome is typically not diagnosed, and from everything I have read, it could be one of the most unrecognized epidemics of our time. Leaky gut syndrome is a digestive condition in which the small intestine becomes damaged – the gut lining becomes permeable causing bacteria and toxins to leak through the intestinal wall and spill out into the bloodstream.  Signs you may have a leaky gut:

  1. Chronic diarrhea, constipation, gas or bloating
  2. Nutritional deficiencies
  3. Poor immune system
  4. Headaches, brain fog, memory loss
  5. Excessive fatigue
  6. Skin rashes and problems such as acne, eczema or rosacea
  7. Sugar and carbohydrate cravings
  8. Arthritis or joint pain
  9. Depression, anxiety, ADD, ADHD
  10. Autoimmune diseases such as lupus, celiac disease rheumatoid arthritis or Crohn’s

Leaky gut syndrome causes cell damage making it difficult to produce the enzymes needed for proper digestion. Without proper digestion, the body is unable to absorb essential minerals, enzymes, and nutrients, which can lead to malabsorption, hormone imbalances, and a weakened immune system.

I didn’t experience alarm bell symptoms one typically has with a digestive issue like diarrhea, gas and bloating. However, I did struggle on and off with constipation, depression and occasionally eczema. In my blog, I explain how I arrived at a self-diagnosis of leaky gut syndrome. Because my gut lining was damaged, juicing was the best nutritional element I could have started. Juicing lifts antioxidant levels and provides the minerals, enzymes, and vitamins to support your body’s natural healing abilities. Start slowly with juicing as it can cause a detox effect, which may cause flu-like symptoms. I suggest drinking no more than 4 ounces to start and build from there; upwards of 32 oz a day during a healing phase.

I tried several juicers and found the Breville works best for me. It is easy to clean and I enjoy the purity and the smoothness of the juice. However, the best juicer is one you’re going to use.

Juicing fresh greens is a fantastic way to boost your antioxidant levels. The minerals, enzymes, and vitamins support your body’s natural healing abilities.

Green Juice Guidance

I juiced every day for six months. Since my surgery, I haven’t been as focused on juicing as I have been on packing the highest nutrition possible into each day, which includes a gluten-free, organic, green powder.
